Women in AI is excited to announce our participation in the AI Action Summit, where we will represent the DIVERSIFAIR project. As part of the DIVERSIFAIR consortium, we are one of 50 featured initiatives, discussing our efforts to address intersectional bias in AI. Funded by the Erasmus+ programme, DIVERSIFAIR is focused on promoting fairer and more inclusive AI systems. In addition, Women in AI France is organising a series of events during the Summit to foster discussions on responsible and inclusive AI.

What is DIVERSIFAIR? Addressing intersectional bias in AI

DIVERSIFAIR (Diversify with Intersectionally FAIRer Artificial Intelligence) is a pioneering European project focused on addressing intersectional bias in AI. The project recognises that people’s identities are shaped by multiple, often overlapping characteristics such as race, gender, social background, and disability. These aspects of identity can intersect in ways that create unique forms of disadvantage or discrimination.

In the context of AI, this means that automated systems can unintentionally perpetuate biases that disproportionately affect individuals with intersecting marginalised identities. A prominent example is the Dutch welfare scandal, where an automated system wrongfully targeted people from ethnic minorities and those with multiple marginalised characteristics, causing severe harm. This incident underscored the risks of AI systems that fail to account for the full complexity of human identity.

DIVERSIFAIR takes a comprehensive, intersectional approach to ensure that AI systems are designed with these complexities in mind. The project focuses on European use cases, data, and models, aligning with the EU’s core values of equality and inclusion. By doing so, DIVERSIFAIR strives to create AI systems that are fairer and more inclusive for everyone. Funded by the Erasmus+ programme, the project aims to foster a more just and equitable technological future.

AI Action Summit: A platform for discussing the future of ethical and inclusive AI

The AI Action Summit, hosted by the Paris Peace Forum, brings together key stakeholders from governments, civil society, the private sector, and academia to explore important issues around AI. The Summit focuses on inclusivity, ethics, and the societal impact of artificial intelligence. It provides a valuable space for projects like DIVERSIFAIR, which aim to promote diversity and fairness in AI systems.

As AI continues to shape our world, it is crucial that we prioritise diversity, fairness, and ethical responsibility in its development. Women in AI is proud to be part of these conversations and to contribute to ensuring that AI technologies serve the needs of diverse communities, especially those who are often overlooked.
