Celebrating One Year of WAI Legal Insights Blog: Elevating Women’s Voices in AI Law

As we wrap up our first year, we extend heartfelt thanks to the incredible leaders and contributors who made WAI Legal Insights a success. Through thoughtful, insightful blogs, women legal professionals across the world have shed light on emerging legal issues in AI.  Since our launch in September 2024, we’ve published 18 blog contributions covering a broad spectrum of timely issues including AI regulation, digital governance, privacy, and practical legal impacts of existing and up and coming legislation world-wide.

Among the most-read articles this year were recent AI regulatory developments in Europe, such as the EU’s Digital Services Act and AI Act. In “What do content moderation, the DSA and AI have in common?” Silvia A. Carretta examined platform responsibility and algorithmic moderation. Meanwhile in “The EU AI Act, diversity and Women in AI” Nebahat Arslan reflected on how inclusive AI development can help counter bias and promote fairness.

We also explored ways to ensure AI effectiveness without violating creators’ rights. In “Robots as authors: what can possibly go wrong?” Marie-Andrée Weisstackled the complex tension between AI development and copyright law.

Our contributors also highlighted real-world applications of AI and emerging legal concerns. Karen Willenberg’s “A story of AI enhancing participatory democracy in South Africa” showed how AI can support democratic process and engagement. Ayesha Gulley’s “Bias audit laws: where are we now?” summarized new legal mechanisms addressing discrimination in algorithmic hiring.

Several pieces addressed AI’s evolving impact on legal systems and innovation. Dina Blikshteyn’s “Rise of avatars in courts” explored the introduction of AI avatars in judicial settings, and Helen McFadzean’s “AI and inventorship” questioned how AI machines are reshaping the boundaries of innovation and patent law. Lucia Loyo’s piece highlighted “The critical role of legal counsel in AI governance,” and Marie Lamothe examined California’s approach to AI privacy in “A new era of protection”.

Each post contributed a unique perspective to our global dialogue on responsible AI governance. We are grateful to our contributors for their thoughtful, rigorous work and to our readers for engaging with these important topics.

During this summer, we will be planning our next edition of WAI Legal Insights, which will resume in September 2025. The upcoming series will highlight key AI legal developments in the 2025-2026 year. We welcome new contributions on emerging legal and legislative developments in AI worldwide. Topics and themes may include recent AI developments in intellectual property rights, data privacy, societal challenges, and regulatory considerations.

We welcome voices and contributors from all over the globe, including perspectives from early-career practitioners and AI law scholars.

We will also publish news about opportunities, upcoming conferences, books to read, calls for papers and other information you need and want to navigate the world of AI & Law.

If you’re interested in contributing or proposing a topic, reach out to the editorial team - we’d love to hear from you!

Thank you for being part of our first year. We wish you all a restful, inspiring summer (or winter down under!) and look forward to continuing the conversation in the fall.

Warm wishes,

Silvia A. Carretta and Dina Blikshteyn
