MEET Dr. Begüm Genç, this week’s WAIROE



Dr. Begüm Genç is a Post-doctoral researcher working as part of the Confirm Centre for Smart Manufacturing hosted by the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at the University College, Cork (UCC). She graduated ranking first in the Computer Engineering Department at Izmir University of Economics (IUE). Subsequently, she completed her MSc thesis in the field of information visualization for biological pathways as a member of the i-Vis research group at Bilkent University. In 2014, she joined the Optimisation and Decision Analytics group at Insight Centre for Data Analytics, UCC for her Ph.D. She has also been lecturing part-time at local colleges.


Her research interests are rather diverse from computer game design to bioinformatics. The vast amount of her experience thus far is on mathematical optimization with a focus on planning and scheduling, matching problems under preference, and applying AI solutions to real-world problems. She has an enthusiasm for contributing to shaping the future of AI whilst holding concerns on its trustworthiness. To this end, she has participated as an interviewer to the deep-dive processes for the evaluation of the assessment list created as part of the Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI developed by HLEG on AI.


She has a growing passion for supporting female participation in STEM with a spotlight on AI and Computer Science. She has been actively participating in the I-Wish events organized in Cork for promoting and inspiring young Irish women to study STEM subjects. Early this year, she became the Cork Community Lead for the Women In AI initiative. The scope of her research and voluntary work entails actively working on organizing talks, events, and workshops, both virtual and physical. Her studies throughout her education were funded by the following institutions, in order: IUE, TUBITAK, SFI. She has international collaborations with France and Turkey. She speaks fluent Turkish and English as well as some German.
