Artificial intelligence is reshaping our world, but who gets to tell the story of our future?
On July 9, Emmy-winning filmmaker and Women in AI Kenya ambassador Lisa Russell premiered her latest short film, Last Broadcast from Earth, at the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva.
Featured in the session “Building the future we want: Scaling inclusive AI solutions through collaboration,” the film sparked critical conversations about the intersection of AI governance, climate justice, and creative storytelling.
The global online premiere follows today, July 10 at 10:00 AM CEST, making the film available for all to watch on YouTube. Watch here: https://youtu.be/QKgbhKXmZn0
A Poetic Warning from a Vanishing World
Last Broadcast from Earth imagines a dystopian future where Earth has been abandoned, and only a single voice remains: an African woman artist, surrounded by the ruins of nature and memory, sending a final message across the stars.
Created entirely using generative AI — from script to visuals to voice — the film offers a haunting reflection on extinction, injustice, and the legacies we leave behind.
For Lisa Russell, the film is not just about technology’s creative potential, but about who has access to shape the future.
AI filmmakers must be at the table — not just in the studio,” says Lisa. “AI is reshaping narratives, identities, and global influence. We need artists who understand justice, who are rooted in community, and who can hold the line between innovation and integrity.
Bridging Art, AI, and Advocacy
Lisa Russell has spent over two decades bringing artistic voices into global policy spaces, using creativity to advance conversations on sustainability, gender equity, and ethical technology.
Her recent AI-focused work includes:
Artistic Diplomacy, featured at AI for Good 2024
A keynote on AI storytelling at the UN Summit of the Future 2024
Founding the Africa AI Creator’s Academy, helping youth and creatives in Kenya, Ghana, Ethiopia, and South Africa learn to use AI tools for storytelling and the future of work
The film’s creation and premiere were supported by a network of partners across the world and the African continent: Women in AI, ArtsEnvoy.ai , POSH IT Ltd (Kenya), Anakosmos Hub (Ghana), InfraNet Technology PLC (Ethiopia), Leading Like Mandela Institute (South Africa)
Together, these organisations are working to equip underrepresented creatives with the tools to shape their own narratives in the AI age.
